Originating in ancient China, acupuncture has a history of more than 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest medical systems in existence. Acupuncture works by stimulating the body’s natural healing functions with fine needles or pressure placed specifically on the body’s meridians, or channels of energy flow. Current scientific research as well as a long history of successful use support acupuncture’s efficacy and usefulness for a wide variety of conditions ranging from pain to sports injuries, fatigue, digestive problems, insomnia, fertility, mental / emotional health, etc. Acupuncturists like Dr. Chan are trained at 3-4 year Oriental Medical schools and licensed by state medical boards.
During an Acupuncture treatment, Dr. Chan listens to the chief complaint and performs a non-invasive physical exam, which may include feeling the pulse, looking at the tongue, and palpating the painful or injured area. Treatment involves placing thin, single-use, sterile needles in specific points on the body to reduce pain and improve function. Dr. Chan may also perform cupping, moxibustion, or tui na as part of a standard treatment. Cupping involves gently using suction cups, usually on the back, to reduce pain and muscle tension. Moxibustion involves using gentle heat to stimulate the channels. Tui na is a form of massage that uses gentle or deep pressure (depending on patient preference) to reduce tension.
