Back-to-School Jitters: How Reflexology Can Help with Anxiety

August 13, 2025

Starting a new school year can bring excitement and jitters for students and teachers alike. Sometimes that nervous energy can become full-blown anxiety. Back-to-school transitions can be tough on the nervous system, but there's a natural, gentle way to help.

Reflexology can help alleviate the back-to-school stress and anxiety by helping the body and mind find balance. It's great for all ages!

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary, holistic therapy based on the theory that all body systems are mapped out on the bottom of the feet in reflex points. These points correspond to areas of the body, including the nervous system. During reflexology, the reflexologist stimulates these reflex points, which help the body shift out of "fight-or-flight" mode and into "rest-and-digest" mode, promoting deep relaxation and balance.

How Does it Help?

  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone)
  • Improves circulation and energy flow
  • Supports emotional balance
  • Provides safe, nurturing touch

Why It Works for Anxiety in Kids

Children often feel anxiety in their bodies before they can even express what it is. It can show up as:

  • Stomach aches
  • Clinginess
  • Sleep issues or bedwetting
  • Outbursts, meltdowns, or tantrums
  • Headaches
  • Unnecessary fears

Reflexology meets kids where they are. It helps to calm their nervous system, release tension, and ease physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety - naturally.

What a Session Looks Like

After a brief intake, during which your reflexologist will inquire about specific concerns, the client sits or lies on a massage table. Only shoes and socks are removed, which helps to alleviate additional anxiety, especially in children.

  • Adults - about 60 minutes
  • Adolescents - 20-45 minutes, depending on needs

Most clients, including children, feel calmer after just one session. Regular visits can offer deeper, ongoing support, which is especially helpful throughout the school year.

A Reflexologist's and a Parent's Perspective

In 2021, a mother brought her 8-year-old daughter to me, hoping reflexology could help with her anxiety. After months of remote learning, her transition back to school was overwhelming. After seeing improvement after just one session, her mom shared their experience with other parents, and soon, I had an influx of 8-10-year-olds with similar struggles. While heartbreaking to see so many young ones dealing with anxiety, I was also happy to know that reflexology was helping these little ones and that they were learning the importance of self-care.

The Power of Natural Support

We want to provide ourselves and our children with every possible tool for success in all areas of life, especially emotionally. Reflexology offers a safe and nurturing way to alleviate the anxiety that accompanies significant changes. It is an excellent self-care technique that everyone should consider trying!
